The Refrigerant in Your AC Is Changing—What Does That Mean for You?

You may not think too much about it, but the refrigerant in your air conditioner plays a critical role in keeping you comfortable during summer. Starting next year, that refrigerant is changing, and the switch will affect you in a few different ways. The experts here at Mueller Heating and Cooling share what you need to know below—and why it might make sense for you to buy a new AC now.

What About My Refrigerant Is Changing?

In short, the refrigerant itself. Currently, the industry-standard for AC refrigerant is something called R-410A. While you don’t need to know exactly what that is, it’s important to know that starting in 2025, that will be phased out in new air conditioner installations.

Instead, brand-new systems will use R-454B refrigerant. It is a much more environmentally friendly version, created to help lower AC refrigerant’s high global warming potential.

What Does This Change Mean for You?

Aside from helping you feel good about shrinking your carbon footprint, R-454B will change a few things where costs are concerned. The first is how it will affect your energy bills. And we mean that in a good way: This new refrigerant is actually two to three percent more energy efficient than what is in your current system. So not only are you helping save the environment—you’re also saving on your energy bills!

However, there is a trade-off. Though new ACs will be energy efficient, the change in refrigerant will make them more expensive, both in terms of the unit itself and labor costs to install it.

Does That Mean I Should Buy a New AC Now?

Yes! Buying a new air conditioner today is a savvy move—because if you wait until the new year and beyond to have the unit you need installed, it will cost a lot more than it will right now. It’s best for your budget, comfort, and monthly utility bills.

It is important to also note that although this switch is happening in 2025, systems with the new R-454B refrigerant are being built now. So while you can still purchase a new air conditioner with the current refrigerant, they are only available while supplies last. After the current AC models are sold out, there will be no new ones made with the old refrigerant—so if you want to avoid paying more for the same system, it’s best to act before they are gone.
